National Basketball Association

The National Basketball Association is the premier professional basketball league in the world: 30 teams, 82-game regular season, Play-In Tournament, and the NBA Playoffs. The NBA is the second-most bet league in the United States after the NFL and offers the deepest player prop market in any sport. This guide covers everything you need to bet on the NBA: divisions, trophies, star players, playoff format, and the full season calendar.

Quick Facts

NBA by the Numbers

30 Teams 29 in the US, 1 in Canada (Toronto). Split into Eastern and Western conferences.
82 Regular Season Games Each team plays 82 games from October to April. 1,230 total games per season.
20 Postseason Teams 16 playoff teams plus 4 Play-In teams (10 per conference enter postseason).
6 Divisions Atlantic, Central, Southeast (East). Northwest, Pacific, Southwest (West). 5 teams each.
Structure

NBA Divisions & Conferences

The NBA is split into two conferences with three divisions each. Unlike the NHL, division finish does not affect playoff seeding; the top 8 teams in each conference make the playoffs (6 automatic + 2 from Play-In). But division rivalries still drive betting interest and matchup familiarity.

Playoffs

NBA Playoff Format

The NBA Playoffs start with a Play-In Tournament before progressing through four best-of-seven rounds. Higher seeds get home-court advantage throughout, which matters in the NBA where home teams win ~63% of playoff games.

1

Play-In Tournament

The 7-10 seeds in each conference compete in single-elimination games for the final two playoff spots. 7 vs 8 winner gets the 7-seed. 9 vs 10 winner faces the 7v8 loser for the 8-seed. Creates two extra postseason rounds for bettors.

2

First Round (Best of 7)

Seeds 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 in each conference. Higher seed gets home-court. Most first-round series end 4-1 or 4-2. Fixed bracket; no re-seeding. This is where most series prices offer value.

3

Conference Semifinals (Best of 7)

Four teams per conference. Division rivals and familiar opponents collide. Pace slows, defense tightens. Star usage climbs as rotations shrink to 8-9 players.

4

Conference Finals (Best of 7)

Two teams per conference battle for the Magic Johnson Trophy (West) and Larry Bird Trophy (East). Fatigue and injuries accumulate. Coach adjustments become decisive.

5

NBA Finals (Best of 7)

Eastern Conference champion vs Western Conference champion. Game 1 on June 3, 2026 on ABC. Highest-scoring basketball market of the year. Finals MVP (Bill Russell Trophy) futures peak here.

Strategy

Where the Value Lives in NBA Betting

Specific edges that experienced NBA bettors target. Each is rooted in observable market behavior.

01

Why player props dominate NBA handle

Player props are now ~40% of total NBA handle, the highest share of any major US sport. Three drivers: (1) NBA player stat distributions are more predictable than other sports (game-to-game variance is lower than NFL), (2) DFS-trained bettors prefer player-stat predictions over team outcomes, (3) sportsbook UX features prop builders prominently with NBA being the lead use case.

02

Back-to-back-night under value

Starting lineup minutes drop 4-8% on B2Bs. Sportsbooks adjust mid-game but lag pre-game. Prop unders on heavy-minute starters are often +EV. First-quarter overs in slow-pace games also tend to hit because Q1 is not where pace differentiation manifests.

03

Live-betting opportunities

Heavy favorites that fall behind early: live moneyline overcorrects when a -300 favorite trails 7-0 in the first 4 minutes. Sharp money picks up the favorite at +130 when fair value is closer to -150. Watch the games.

04

Tanking-team props in April

Lineups change drastically when a team announces "rest the starters" mode. Player-prop pricing lags reality for 1-2 games after the announcement. Sharp bettors fade prop overs on starters who suddenly play fewer minutes.

Rebounds -110 typical Over/under on rebounds. Big men like Jokic and Wemby sit 10.5-12.5 rebounds per game.
Assists -110 typical Over/under on assists. Point guards like Jokic and SGA sit at 6.5-9.5 assists.

FAQ

NBA Betting FAQ

How many teams are in the NBA?

There are 30 NBA teams: 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada (Toronto Raptors). They are split into two conferences (Eastern and Western) with three divisions per conference (Atlantic, Central, Southeast in the East; Northwest, Pacific, Southwest in the West). Each division has 5 teams.

What is the Play-In Tournament?

The Play-In Tournament is a mini-postseason introduced in 2021 to determine the 7 and 8 seeds in each conference. The 7 vs 8 seeds play first; winner gets the 7-seed. The 9 vs 10 seeds play next; winner faces the 7v8 loser for the 8-seed. This adds 4-6 extra postseason games and expanded betting markets.

Who are the 2026 NBA Finals favorites?

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the betting favorites at +110 to defend their 2025 championship, the shortest odds for any NBA title favorite since the 2017 Warriors. San Antonio Spurs (+500) and Boston Celtics (+550) round out the top three. Detroit Pistons at +2200 are the best story as the #1 seed in the East for the first time since 2007.

When does the NBA regular season start and end?

The NBA regular season runs from late October through mid-April. Each team plays 82 games. The Play-In Tournament follows in mid-April, then the Playoffs begin on April 18, 2026. The NBA Finals tip off June 3, 2026 on ABC.

What is the most bet NBA prop?

Points is the most bet NBA player prop market. Elite scorers like SGA, Wembanyama, and Tatum typically have point totals set at 27.5-32.5 points. Assists and rebounds props are softer markets where sharp bettors often find better long-term edges due to less efficient pricing.

How important is home-court advantage in the NBA playoffs?

Very important. Home teams win roughly 63% of NBA playoff games, significantly higher than in the regular season (55%). The #1 seed gets home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, meaning 4 of 7 potential games at home in every round. This is why the race for the top seed drives so much betting interest.

Which states allow NBA betting?

Sports betting is legal in over 30 US states, all of which allow NBA betting. Check our state-by-state guides for local sportsbooks, bonuses, and regulations. Every major state with legal betting offers deep NBA markets including spreads, moneylines, totals, player props, and championship futures.

What is load management and how does it affect betting?

Load management is when teams rest healthy star players to prevent injuries and preserve energy for the playoffs. It is most common for veteran stars (LeBron, Kawhi) in the second night of back-to-backs. The NBA now enforces rules requiring stars to play in nationally televised games, but rest is still a major factor. Always check the injury report 30 minutes before tip.
